Mother Earth School offers community experiences of the yearly rhythm through seasonal festivals.
While our daily programs cycle through a predictable rhythmic arc, the children gain connection to the year through seasonal events celebrating agricultural cycles of hibernation and rebirth. These festivals are completely secular while beautifully expressing the mood and atmosphere of the farm, nourishing the young child's inner life and sense of belonging to the world. In the days prior to a festival, the children prepare by preparing an appropriate handicraft to take home after the festival is finished. Three examples of these events are:
The Lantern Walk in November when children and parents are invited to walk in quiet just as the evening falls while holding handmade lanterns, seeing the way the farm has been put to rest for the Winter.
The Winter Spiral Garden at solstice time when each child, and parents too, walk through a spiral labyrinth of evergreen boughs and moss gardens.
The May Pole dance in the Spring, when children hold colorful ribbons to circle around the May Pole together.
